WORK OF THE COURSE
Homework. You will receive an agenda every two weeks, listing the material to be covered in class and the daily assignments. Plan to spend 20-30 minutes EVERY NIGHT preparing your Latin homework. Assignments usually have two parts, a “study” assignment and a written assignment. Spend the first half of your study time reviewing the “study” material, and the second part completing the written work. Written work is due at the beginning of class.
Quizzes. There will be a twenty-minute quiz at the end of every chapter, covering the grammar and vocabulary of the unit. Occasionally, there are oral quizzes on specific grammatical forms. Most quizzes are announced in advance.
Tests. There will be a full-period test every 3-4 weeks. We will discuss in detail the format of each test several days before. All tests are cumulative: you must show that you remember the old material as well as have mastered the new material.
Projects and special assignments. At least once a trimester, there will be a project or special assignment on cultural topics or English vocabulary. You will receive a rubric for each. Credit varies depending on the size of the assignment, but most are worth about 150 points.
Participation and preparation. See IV.
Final examination. There will be a final exam at the end of each trimester. We will discuss the format in detail, and spend several days reviewing in class.
EVALUATION
Each activity carries a number of points. For instance, quizzes are usually worth around 75 points; tests about 200 points; participation and preparation is worth five points a day. At the end of the trimester, I add up the number of points offered, the number of points you earned, and divide to get your grade.
PARTICIPATION AND PREPARATION
Each student will receive five points a day based on his/her demonstrating the following behaviors.
A GOOD LATIN STUDENT:
comes to class on time with book, notebook, completed homework and writing utensil.
maintains a well-organized notebook.
takes notes when appropriate.
asks and answers questions in class willingly.
listens carefully to the teacher and the other students.
corrects homework in class as we go over it.
seeks extra instruction THE MINUTE s/he realizes there is a lack of understanding.
wears proper uniform to class.
does not chew gum, eat or drink (except water) in class.
does not interrupt class with bathroom requests, except in case of dire emergency.
avoids frequent absence from school, especially on test and quiz days.
abides by the Bullis Honor Code at all times.
Please note that violations of school rules (gum, uniform, disrespect, unexcused tardiness or absence) will be treated as disciplinary infractions, and result in comportment forms as well as deductions from the p & p grade.
MAKE-UP POLICY
If you are absent from school, all work is due the day you return to class. Assignments are available from the web site, if you have lost your agenda. TAKE YOUR LATIN BOOK HOME EVERY NIGHT. Quizzes and tests must be made up the day you return to school, during a study hall or extra instruction.
In the case of an absence of more than three days, see me the day you return to school to establish a make-up schedule. In case of a serious emergency requiring an extensive absence, have a parent inform Mr. Ruiz or Mr. Delinsky, so that appropriate make-up schedules can be arranged.
MAKING UP WORK IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Keep me informed.
