STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman has announced the signing of Jeremy Myers to play for the Texan men’s basketball program starting the 2009-10 season.
Myers, a 6-1, 190-pound guard from Fort Washington, Md., will be a junior for the Texans next season. He will transfer to Tarleton from Hagerstown Community College where he spent one year following his freshmen season at Central Connecticut State, a NCAA Division I member.
“I liked Jeremy right away the first time I saw him,” Reisman said. “He is a young man of great character that brings a lot of versatility to our backcourt. He’s a multi-dimensional guard that shoots from the perimeter well but also can get to the basket and finish with contact. Jeremy is a strong guard that will be an asset during the physical rigors of the Lone Star Conference. He’s played both backcourt positions in high school and junior college, and he will be an exciting combo guard in our league to follow for the next two seasons.”
Myers averaged 12.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game last season at Hagerstown CC. He also averaged 3.0 assists and 2.4 steals per outing while shooting 48 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line. He finished the year ranked No. 7 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (53.3). Myers helped his team advance to the semifinals of the regional tournament, and his team completed the campaign with a 21-8 record. The newest Texan scored 27 points against Howard Community College with four assists and three steals. He also scored 26 against Garrett Colllege where he scored 20 points in the second half.
Before his stint at HCC, he played in 29 games at the Division I level at CCSU. He shot .333 from the three-point arc and .400 from the field while connecting on 76.9 percent from the charity tripe. As a true freshman, Myers scored eight points at Michigan on Nov. 10, 2006 while adding six against MonMouth on Feb. 15, 2007. He also saw action in the NCAA Championship Tournament when his team, which finished
22-12 overall and 13-4 in the Northeast Conference, played Ohio State in the first round of the “Big Dance.”
“Jeremy brings us a lot of experience and leadership,” Reisman said. “He is a very versatile player that will be strong on both the defensive and offensive end of the floor.”
A graduate of Bullis Prep High School, Myers was selected to the Capital Classic All-Star Game. He was also named to the 2005 and 2006 All-MET Team and was chosen as an all-conference, all-county and All-Gazette selection in both his junior and senior seasons. Myers averaged 18.0 points, six assists and four rebounds per game during his final high school season. Myers played football and basketball all four years in high school. “The single most attribute which stands out about Jeremy Myers, is he plays to win,” said his high school head coach Bruce Kelly. “Too many kids play for other reasons. Jeremy loves to compete. He always wanted to cover the other teams best players whether it was Ty Lawson who went to North Carolina or Chris Wright from Georgetown, it did not matter. It was a matter of
pride, and he was going to make them respect him. Tarleton fans will love the way Jeremy plays the game.”
Myers is looking forward to coming to Tarleton to play for Reisman and the men’s basketball program.
“I chose Tarleton over the other schools because of the family environment of the team and the confidence the coaching staff has in my abilities,” Myers said. “I wanted to go to a place that had a winning background and state of mind and Tarleton has that.”
