jlawrence.bmpIn this year-long course, we will think, read, write, discuss, present, and revise our ideas about the representation of power in literature, particularly in terms of race, class, gender, and space.  We will explore how personal and political power is manifested in and through literature. Students will lead discussions, practice structured debate, and hone their writing and research skills.We will also investigate various perspectives on the concept of territory—in the American wilderness, the Congolese jungle, and the kingdoms of fairy tales.  Texts include: The Tempest, Heart of Darkness, Invisible Man, The Making of a Poem, and Disgrace. The course materials will vary genre and media—including literary criticism, films such as The Searchers, Apocalypse Now, and Stage Beauty as well as painting, photography, music, and websites.
