In this year-long course, we will think, read, write, discuss, present, and revise our ideas about the representation of power in literature, particularly in terms of race, class, and gender.  We will explore how personal and political power is manifested in and through literature. Students will lead discussions, practice structured debate, and hone their writing and research skills.  Texts include: The Bluest Eye, Disgrace, Brown by Richard Rodriguez, The Great Gatsby, and Drown. The course materials will vary genre and media—including literary criticism, films such as American Beauty, Stage Beauty as well as painting, photography, music, and websites.
